Whether you support Trump or not, I hope we can all agree this is bullshit.
The Men in Suits have denied a Florida libraries request for a digital subscription to the New York Times. Here is how their conversation went during a public meeting: (you can’t make this shit up)
County Commissioner #1: Do we really need to subscribe to The New York Times?
County Commissioner #2: I actually was going to say that. I’m going to be a ‘no’ for this. Fake news. I agree with President Trump.
County Commissioner Scott Carnahan: I will not vote for this. I do not want The New York Times in this county. (Okay, Hilter.)
County Commissioner #3: I know you have 140 readers, but those guys can subscribe and have it in their home. I support Donald Trump. (I think this commissioner has forgotten the mission of libraries, and who their demographics are.)
County Commissioner #4: When I saw $2700 a year for a digital format for a newspaper- how many people are actually reading that for the $2700? (4 million readers last year.)
County Commissioner #5: Why the heck would we spend money on something like that? (To gain knowledge and think critically. Derp.)
Commissioner Jimmie T. Smith said in a statement after their meeting hit headlines… “Basically, a subscription to something we already have in print is a redundancy that we didn’t need to spend money on.
The only sane person, Advisory board Chairwoman Sandy Price said “Someone’s personal political view does not have a place in deciding what library resources are available for the entire county.” (70,000 PEOPLE!)
Where will they stop? Will the The Hate U Give be next? Will Obama’s books be removed? Will democratic websites be banned? Political censorship is a problem, an age old one that only ends in war. And honesty, Commissioners, you don’t want to go to war with Book Nerds.
