Have y’all seen Freedom Writers? That AMAZE-BALL movie where Hillary Swank lays the hammer down on some teens who are going down the wrong path? Or when Michelle Pfeiffer turned into a bad ass in Dangerous Minds and helped young adults express their selves not through violence, but poetry? Do the Write Thing Challenge is like Hillary and Michelle (Omg- Hillary & Michelle, Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama- CONSPIRACY ALERT! Anyways, Do the Write Thing Challenge is like the baby of Hillary & Michelle.
The primary initiative of the “Do the Write Thing Challenge” Program is to give middle school students an opportunity to examine the impact of violence on their lives in classroom discussions and in written form by communicating what they have seen to be the causes of youth violence as well as solutions to help decrease the violence in their communities. By encouraging students to make personal commitments to do something about the problem, the program ultimately seeks to empower them to reduce violence in their homes, schools and neighborhoods.
To that end, DtWT also encourages the formation of groups called Community Peace Partnerships that work with local government, business and community leaders to provide opportunities such as job training internships, mentoring and academic scholarships for students who have participated in the program.
